Macarley was born profoundly deaf in both ears. She has a condition known as Waardenburg’s Syndrome which is also the reason she has two different colored eyes. Macarley’s family rescued a dog named Bailey who is also deaf and had two different colored eyes! Macarley has cochlear implants and without this form of treatment would be unable to hear and have limited speech if any. With the help of cochlear implants and therapy from the Listen Foundation which focuses on learning to listen and talk, Macarley has written a book about how to train a deaf dog. Macarley was able to write this book because this therapy allowed her to be mainstreamed in school and learn how to read and write along with her typical hearing classmates.
