Our History

The Listen Foundation was incorporated in 1969 when a group of parents came together because they shared the common experience of raising a child with a hearing impairment. These parents recognized that many other parents and professionals were unaware of technological and therapeutic options that enable children with a hearing loss to listen, speak and become part of mainstream society and that many families that might want to pursue these options did not have the financial means to pay for these services.
The initial program was developed by the late Doreen Pollack, an internationally recognized author and expert in the field of Auditory-Verbal therapy - an innovative approach that helps children to use their residual hearing and speaking potential to communicate with spoken language rather than sign language. Since then, we have built up a network of the finest therapists in the state to continue the work that Ms Pollack pioneered.
In the summer of 2002, the Listen Foundation merged with Hear at Home to more effectively promote their similar missions.
In 2003, we started a collaboration with the State of Colorado to fund one of the therapists in our network - Nan Thompson - to be the Oral Communication Consultant for the Colorado Hearing Impaired Program (CHIP), which provides services for birth to three year olds with hearing loss. Nan is helping CHIP providers understand and become proficient in auditory-verbal therapy, so that they can offer this option to parents with very young deaf or hard-of-hearing children.
Last year, Listen won the prestigious El Pomar Award of Excellence in the Health Care Small category. The award was a strong reinforcement of the value of our mission and its importance in our community.
